Course Memo

In this course we will seek to understand and appreciate Gothic architecture by studying its origins in the twelfth-thirteenth century northern France. We will begin the course with a detailed overview of the early Christian, Byzantine and Romanesque architecture that will help to understand the emergence of the early Gothic style in architecture. We will explore the making, meaning, and social resonance of the early French Gothic cathedrals. In particular, we will examine Gothic architecture as an expression of the theological vision of its time. This course will help students reflect on and articulate the religious and intellectual significance of church architecture. Pre-requisites: none
